Those mesmerizing vases and figurines that transition through every color of the spectrum with a gorgeous metallic sheen. But is this filament actually good to print with, or is it just eye candy for social media? We put the Mika3D Rainbow Silk PLA through extensive testing to find out.
Overall Verdict
Beautiful results with some quirks โ absolutely worth it for the right projects.
Rating Breakdown
What Is Rainbow Silk PLA?
Rainbow silk PLA is a specialty filament that combines two effects: a color-changing gradient along the length of the spool, and a silk additive that gives prints a pearlescent, metallic finish. As you print, the filament transitions through reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, and purples โ creating unique patterns on every print.
The Mika3D version is the most popular on Amazon, and it's the one we've tested most extensively. It comes in a 1kg spool with smooth, gradual color transitions.
How It Prints
Here's the honest truth: rainbow silk PLA prints differently than standard PLA. The silk additive changes the flow characteristics, and you'll want to adjust a few settings. But once dialed in, the results are spectacular.
Our Tested Settings (Bambu Lab A1)
- Nozzle temp: 215-220ยฐC (slightly higher than standard PLA)
- Bed temp: 60ยฐC
- Speed: 40-60mm/s (slow it down for best surface quality)
- Retraction: Increase by 10-15% from your PLA profile
- Cooling: 80-100% fan after first layer
- Layer height: 0.2mm for vases, 0.12mm for detailed models
What Prints Look Best
Not every model suits rainbow silk. Here's where it shines and where it doesn't:
โ Prints Great:
- Vases โ This is what rainbow silk was made for. Spiral mode vases with flowing organic shapes are incredible.
- Figurines & Statues โ Dragons, busts, decorative figures. The color transitions follow the layers in visually striking patterns.
- Articulated toys โ Fidget dragons and octopuses look amazing in rainbow (see our fidget toy guide).
- Large single-piece prints โ The bigger the print, the more colors you see in one piece.
โ Not Ideal For:
- Small prints โ You might only see 1-2 colors, losing the rainbow effect.
- Functional parts โ Silk PLA is weaker than standard PLA. Use eSUN PLA+ for anything structural.
- Precise mechanical parts โ The diameter can vary slightly more than premium brands.
- Multi-part assemblies โ Color matching between parts is impossible since the transitions are random.
Color Transition Length
One thing people always ask: how long are the color transitions? With the Mika3D spool, each color holds for roughly 15-25 meters before blending into the next. On a typical vase print, you'll see 3-5 distinct color zones. On a large figurine, you might get the full rainbow spectrum in a single print.
How It Compares
We tested Mika3D rainbow silk against a few alternatives:
- vs. SUNLU Silk PLA (single color): SUNLU's single-color silk prints more consistently and is stronger. Choose it when you want a specific metallic color. Choose Mika3D when you want the rainbow wow-factor.
- vs. Standard PLA: Standard PLA like Hatchbox is easier to print and stronger. Rainbow silk trades reliability for aesthetics.
- vs. Other rainbow silks: Mika3D has the smoothest transitions we've seen. Some cheaper alternatives have abrupt color changes that look choppy.
Storage Tips
Silk PLA is more moisture-sensitive than standard PLA. We've noticed that a spool left out for a week starts showing surface imperfections. Keep it in a SUNLU dry box when printing, and store opened spools in vacuum bags with desiccant. See our full filament storage guide for more tips.
Is It Worth It?
Yes โ with caveats. If you're printing decorative pieces, gifts, or content for social media, rainbow silk PLA is absolutely worth the slightly higher price. The visual impact is unmatched, and every print feels like a unique piece of art.
But if you need strength, precision, or consistency, stick with a workhorse PLA like Bambu Lab PLA Basic. Use rainbow silk for the show pieces, and reliable PLA for everything else.
